FAINTING

What is fainting?

Fainting is also known as passing out, blacking out, collapsing, or losing consciousness. The medical terms for fainting are reflex syncope, vasovagal syncope or neurocardiogenic syncope. Fainting can also happen in sufferers of POTS or those who suffer a drop in blood pressure when getting up from lying/sitting to standing. Occasionally fainting is due to a problem with the heart rhythm or the heart muscle/valves.

Fainting occurs due to a temporary loss of consciousness which happens due to a reduced blood supply to the brain from a sudden drop in blood pressure. This loss in blood pressure is often wrongly activated by the body’s nervous system which involuntarily controls body functions. Fainting is commonly triggered by standing, particularly for prolonged periods in a hot environment. It can also occur due to fear or anxiety particularly in relation to medical or dental procedures or vaccinations.

How can STANDFAST help?

STANDFAST can be used as a treatment for fainting. STANDFAST is a sodium salt based isotonic drink. STANDFAST has the following beneficial effects for people who faint or feel faint:

  • Increases Plasma Volume:

    • Increases plasma volume by approximately 300ml (about the volume of a can of soft drink) within a few days. The blood volume can also expland following this.

    • Useful for conditions which commonly have a low plasma volume like POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and vasovagal syncope.

  • Enhances Vascular Resistance:

    • Improves the body’s ability to squeeze arteries and veins during prolonged standing.

  • Effective Against Fainting:

    • Increases the threshold to fainting.

    • Reduces symptoms in individuals prone to feeling faint.

  • Quick Results:

    • Positive effects demonstrated in as little as three days.

  • High Success Rate:

    • Multiple studies have demonstrated that salt supplementation increases the threshold to fainting and reduces symptoms in individuals who faint or regularly feel faint.

    • Studies suggest that 3/4 of participants with fainting improve following salt supplementation.
